Prints and the Pursuit of Knowledge examines how celebrated Northern Renaissance artists contributed to the scientific investigations of the 16th century. The exhibition and its accompanying catalogue challenge the perception of artists as illustrators in the service of scientists. Artists’ printed images served as both instruments for research and agents in the dissemination of knowledge. The exhibition, displaying prints, books, maps, and such instruments as sundials, globes, astrolabes, and armillary spheres, looks at relationships between their producers and their production, as well as among the objects themselves. The story of 16th-century technology is enhanced by technology of the 21st, with interactive computers in the galleries, an interactive module on the website, and an iPhone/iPad application in iTunes.

This collection of approximately 300 rare books reveals and illustrates most of the major milestones in the history of ancient and modern scientific discovery, from incunabula of the late 15th century up to the 20th. The earliest and rarest materials range from a 1495 edition of the celestial works of the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, to early editions of many of the most important and influential works of the Scientific Revolution by Nicolas Copernicus, Johannes Kepler, Galileo Galilei, Christian Huygens, Sir Isaac Newton, and many others. The collection also contains many of the seminal works of the European Enlightenment by Antoine Lavoisier, Roger Boscovich, Henry Cavendish, and William Herschel, as well as milestones of the period of the Industrial Revolution by James Clark Maxwell, Charles Darwin, J. R. Mayer, and Alexander Volta. Nearly every monumental scientific publication of the early-to-mid 20th-century—perhaps the most well-represented portion of the collection—is represented in rare off-prints of groundbreaking essays (some signed as presentation copies to fellow scientists by the original authors) and fine first editions, including the works of Albert Einstein, Max Planck, Ernest Rutherford, as well as Werner Heisenberg, Linus Pauling, and Edwin Hubble.

One of the most versatile talents of the modern art movement in Germany, the American-born Lyonel Feininger (1871–1956) is celebrated as a master of caricature, figurative painting, and a distinctive brand of cubism, but he also created a fascinating body of photographic work that is virtually unknown. Drawn primarily from the artist’s own collection (now at Harvard University), this exhibition offers the first opportunity to consider his achievement within the medium. Focusing on the rich and productive period between 1928 and the late 1930s, when Feininger was experimenting with an array of avant-garde photographic techniques and printing his own work, these photographs range from early atmospheric night views made at the Bauhaus (where he took up the camera in 1928) to bird’s-eye views of New York City (where he settled permanently in 1937).

Growing Every Which Way But Up: The Children’s Book Art of Jules Feiffer

As an artist and writer of probing wit and uncommon humanity, Jules Feiffer has made a breathtakingly varied contribution to America’s cultural life. The Carle will honor his efforts as a children’s book author with this exhibition. Feiffer has excelled in journalism, in film, and off Broadway. The exhibition will focus on his equally prodigious talents as an author and illustrator of children’s books. Book-ended by his collaboration with Norton Juster, The Phantom Tollbooth (1961) and The Odious Ogre (2010), the exhibition focuses on his own books. From I’m Not Bobby! and By The Side Of The Road, where Feiffer heralds “to heck with grownups,” to Bark, George where he aimed at taking the lid off the excessive worry. Feiffer found that picture-book artists and cartoonists lived by many of the same imperatives: the need to instantly grab the reader’s attention, the need to simplify without oversimplifying, and the need to keep the action moving. In sum, this will be a very lively exhibition.

Drawn from the ancient, vast, and comprehensive archives of the Imprimerie Nationale, Printing for Kingdom, Empire, & Republic will document the significant influence of the press, not only on printing and the book arts, but also on French — and therefore European — literary culture from the mid-sixteenth century to the present day. The exhibition has been organized by The Grolier Club and the Groupe Imprimerie Nationale, S.A., with administrative and organizational support from the Institut Mémoires de l’Édition Contemporaine (IMEC), France’s largest archive of authorial and publishing materials.
